Billions of pounds of trash and other pollutants enter the ocean each year.
There is so much pollution that it gets washed up on beaches.
The debris that does not get pushed to the shore sinks down to the ocean floor
and marine life eats it thinking its food. Human health and the environment are
negatively affected by wastewater pollution. For ocean life such as coral,
fish, and shellfish, wastewater can transport pathogens, nutrients, contaminants,
and solids to the ocean, which can cause these sea animals to be bleached, diseased,
and even causing them to die. The wastewater also contains suspended solids, such
as decomposing plant matter, algae, minerals, and silt, which float in the water.
Solid pollution decreases water clarity and blocks sunlight which makes it difficult
for fish to find food. One of every 6 jobs in the U.S. is marine-related so having the
oceans polluted impacts that.
