Sustainable ocean
A sustainable ocean economy is one in which we effectively protect marine
and coastal ecosystems. We can use ocean resources in a sustainable way,
and ensure that the benefits of ocean and ocean industries are shared
fairly and can last for future generations. In addition, the oceans and
their resources play a key role in ensuring food security and people's
welfare while providing an important buffer against climate change and
biodiversity decline. The health of oceans is important to our planet,
society and world economy. As a result of stress factors including climate
change, pollution, land use changes and the direct exploitation of marine
resources, almost all sectors contribute to declining ocean health.
